South Park Primary School is a primary school located in Ilford in the London Borough of Redbridge. The headteacher is currently Debbie Keigwin, formerly headmistress of Wellington Way Primary School in nearby Tower Hamlets. She was appointed to the position in 2009 after the departure of Douglas Rae; he had taught at the school since 1992, before becoming headteacher in 2001.[1] The school is notable for being one of the oldest and largest primary schools in the borough; it was opened in January 1908, and centenary celebrations were held in 2008.

Its catchment area covers a large part of the southern area of Redbridge and some areas of the surrounding boroughs, and the school has a large intake with nearly 800 pupils on roll. Ofsted has recently described it as a good school, where "personal development is outstanding" and "behaviour is exemplary".[2]

History

The school was founded in 1908 as Ilford Urban Elementary School; a plaque commemorating this is on display in the school grounds.

Formerly comprising two distinct departments, named South Park Junior School and South Park Infant School, these were amalgamated into their present form in 2000, celebrated with a party involving all the staff and pupils. A poem was specially written for the event by former pupil Pauline Stewart.

Site

Whilst the main buildings are located on Water Lane, the nursery department are on a separate site on South Park Drive; this was highlighted as a cause for concern in a public consultation conducted by Redbridge borough council. As a result of this consultation, plans were made to renovate certain areas of the school buildings in order to "provide the additional accommodation that is required to make South Park Primary suitable as a modern school."
